Scheduling a Health Exam

 

When the time approaches to schedule a health exam these days, I find myself in a dilemma. It's hard to decide when to get the check-up and whether to undergo a colonoscopy.

Back when I was a lower-level employee at work, I loved getting a check-up.

After finishing the health exam, I could take the rest of the day off. And if I scheduled the exam on a Friday, I could enjoy a long weekend. And since I was expecting positive results, the health check-up was a pleasant experience.

​

But after scheduling a date for the health check-up in recent years, I often end up changing the reservation. Due to sudden meetings, dinner gatherings that I can't get out of, and various unexpected situations, I rarely actually go in for the check-up on the originally reserved date. As for the colonoscopy, I hesitate because I have to spend quite a lot of time in the bathroom after taking the medication to empty the bowels. Even so, I am determined to do it next year.

Pattern Practice

1. take the rest of the day off : 하루 중 남은 시간을 쉬다, 조퇴하다

 

After finishing the health exam, I could take the rest of the day off.

건강 검진을 마친 이후 남은 반나절 이상을 쉴 수 있었다.

 

I felt a little sick, so I took the rest of the day off.

나는 몸이 좀 안 좋아서 조퇴를 했다.

 

The weather was so nice that I took the rest of the day off.

날씨가 워낙 좋아서 그날 남은 시간은 쉬기로 했다.

2. expect positive results : 양호한 결과를 기대하다.

 

Since I was expecting positive results, the health check-up was a pleasant experience.

검진 결과가 양호할 것으로 기대했기 때문에 건강 검진은 즐거운 경험이었다.

 

You can't expect positive results with so little effort.

그렇게 노력을 적게 들이고 긍정적인 결과를 기대할 수는 없다.

 

I'm not worried, because I expect positive results.

양호한 결과를 기대하기 때문에 나는 걱정되지 않는다.

3. change the reservation : 예약을 변경하다

 

I often end up changing the reservation.

예약 일자를 결국 변경하는 경우가 많다.

 

We still have time to change the reservation.

우리는 아직 예약을 변경할 시간이 있다.

 

My friend couldn't come so l changed the reservation.

​ 친구가 올 수 없게 되어서 나는 예약을 변경했다.

​Dialogue Practice

A : Next, you'll be receiving an upper endoscopy while under conscious sedation.

 

B : Excuse me? This early in the health exam?

 

A : It's best to get it out of the way now, because you won't have to wait as long.

 

B : So, will you also take a blood sample at the same time?

 

A : No. That will be done after the endoscopy.

 

B : But that means you'll have to insert a needle into both arms.
