A Happy English Student 

My mentor, a 60-year-old Ph.D., once said that friends should read books together and talk them over. Nowadays, I couldn't agree more. For the past three months, I've been actively participating in a book club where we read English novels, and it's just the best.

 

To be honest, I wasn't really interested at first. Learning English had always felt like a burden to me. But as I kept at it, there came moments when I thought I was reading a Korean book instead of an English one. It feels like I've finally gotten into the thrill of reading Enlish books. 

 

I still come across unfamiliar words often, and I don't really make good time. Even so, the members who empathize with my thoughts in my book reports make it even more enjoyable. 

Pattern Practice 

1. couldn't agree more : 매우 공감하다 (동의하다)

 

Nowadays, I couldn't agree more. 

요즘 그 말씀에 정말 공감합니다. 

 

I couldn't agree more with what she said. 

나는 그녀가 한 말에 적극적으로 동의한다. 

 

I couldn't agree more with the director's message. 

나는 감독의 메시지에 매우 공감이 간다. 

 

2. keep at it : 꾸준히 하다 

 

Learning English had always felt like a burden to me, but I kept at it.

저는 예전부터 영어 학습이 늘 버거웠지만, 그래도 꾸준히 했습니다. 

 

You need to keep at it for at least a few years.

최소 몇 년간은 꾸준히 노력해야 해.

 

It was hard at first, but I kept at it. 

처음에는 힘들었지만, 나는 꾸준히 했다. 

 

3. make good time : 진척 속도가 빠르다 

 

I still don't really make good time.

여전히 빠르게 읽지는 못합니다. 

 

We can make good time if we leave now. 

지금 출발하면 신속하게 갈 수 있어.

 

The lessons were hard at first, but we are making good time now. 

레슨이 처음에는 어려웠지만, 이제는 진척 속도가 빠른 편이다. 

 

Dialogue Practice 

A : I find English really enjoyable these days. 

 

B : Oh, really? You must have always enjoyed studying it. 

 

A : No, not at all. I used to hate it in school. I found it too difficult. 

 

B : But how did you suddenly start to enjoy it?

 

A : I read English books with some new friends, and we share our thoughts.

 

B: Oh, you've joined a book club.
