Speaking with a Foreigner on the Street 

 

A few days ago, I was out with my mom. While waiting for the bus at the bus stop, a woman behind me from overseas said, "Excuse me." She had a tired expression, as if she hadn't received an answer even after talking to several people earlier.

She wanted to take a bus to the train station to catch a train, and she asked if it was the right bus to take. However, since the bus she mentioned takes a longer route through the city, I wanted to inform her that another bus with a different number would be a quicker option.

​

She asked why the other bus was faster, and I tried my best to explain it to her in English. I wasn't fully satisfied because what I said didn't seem grammatically correct, and I wondered if I had conveyed the message properly. But I saw her board the correct bus, and I felt a quiet sense of satisfaction

Pattern Practice 

 

1. have a tired expression : 지친 표정이다

 

She had a tired expession, as if she had talked to several people earlier.

그녀는 이미 여러 사람에게 물어본 듯 지친 표정이었습니다. 

 

He was very friendly, but he had a tired expression.

그는 매우 친절했지만, 표정은 지쳐 보였다.

 

He had a tired expression on his face, so I didn't say anything.

그는 얼굴 표정이 지쳐 보여서 나는 아무 말도 하지 않았다.

 

2. a quicker option : 더 빠른 선택지

 

I wanted to inform her that another bus with a different number would be a quicker option.

다른 번호의 버스가 더 빠르다고 그녀에게 알려 주고 싶었습니다. 

 

I know a quicker option than that.

나는 그것보다 더 빠른 방법을 알고 있다.

 

The sat-nav recommended a quicker option.

​내비게이션이 더 빠른 경로를 추천했다.

 

3. convey a message properly : 의사를 제대로 전달하다

 

I wondered if I had conveyed a message properly.

의사를 제대로 전달한 건가 싶었습니다.

 

It's sometimes difficult to convey a message properly.

때로는 의사를 제대로 전달하기가 쉽지 않다.

 

Being able to convey a message properly is an important skill.

의사를 제대로 전달할 수 있는 것은 중요한 역량이다.

Dialogue Practice 

 

A: A foreigner approached me on the street yesterday and struck up a conversation in English.

 

B: Oh, really?

 

A: Yes, she was asking for directions.

 

B: Did you help her out?

 

A: I tried to use waht I've learned from studying. But I was a little nervous.

 

B: You must have felt very proud!
