Buying a Used Car

 

I finally got my driver's license recently, so I decided to take the plunge and buy a car. I was tired of commuting by public transportation for so long. Plus, I liked the idea that having a car would change my life, since it would enable me to move about more freely.

Due to financial constraints, I decided to buy a used car instead of a new one.

There were so many things to take into consideration to get a car in decent condition. As someone who doesn't know much about cars, the buying process really stressed me out.

​

Fortunately, I found many reviews online about the process of buying used cars. Some used car sales platforms also sell cars after their own certification process, which was very helpful. These resources are very useful for consumers who want to safely buy a second-hand car.

Pattern Practice

 

1. take the plunge : 큰맘 먹고 하다 

 

I decided to take the plunge and buy a car.

나는 큰맘 먹고 차를 구매하기로 결심을 했다.

 

I finally took the plunge and reserved tickets to Jeju.

나는 마침내 큰맘 먹고 제주행 표를 예매했다.

 

I'm not ready to take the plunge yet.

​나는 아직 그런 큰 결정을 할 마음의 준비가 안 됐다.

 

2. commute by public transportation : 대중교통으로 출퇴근하다 

 

I was tired of commuting by public transportation for so long.

나는 오랜 대중교통 출퇴근에 지친 상태였다.

 

Most people in the city commute by public transportation.

도시에 거주하는 사람들은 대부분 대중교통으로 출퇴근한다.

 

I can't commute by public transportation to my new job.

​ 나는 새 직장에 대중교통으로 출퇴근할 수가 없다.

 

3. in decent condtion : 상태가 괜찮은 

 

There were so many things to consider to get a car in decent condition.

상태가 괜찮은 차를 사기 위해서는 신경 써야 할 것이 너무 많았다.

 

It's a bit old, but it's in decent condition.

조금 오래되긴 했지만, 상태는 괜찮다.

 

If it's still in decent condition, it will probably be expensive.

​아직 상태가 괜찮은 편이라면 아마 가격이 비쌀 것이다.

A : Isn't that a recent model?

 

B : Yes, but it's two years old. I picked it up used.

 

A : Really? It looks and feels brand new!
