Apology Day

​

 

My fourth-grade daughter goes to school with her bestie every day. But one day, she told me that she had been in an argument with this friend. As a result, they started going to school separately, and my daughter seemed to be in a gloomy mood. I didn't think much of it at first, believing they would soon make up. However, as other friends got involved between them, the situation seemed to get worse by the day.

When the issue didn't resolve itself over time, I met with the friend's mother for a heart-to-heart.

​

A few days later, it was October 24, which is known as "Apple Day." It's a play on words in Korean, meaning two people can apologize to each other.

To mark this day, the children's teacher organized a campaign where students apologized for things they were sorry for. In the end, my daughter and her friend apologized to each other, hugged, and made up. I feel that my daughter has grown a lot through this process.

Pattern Practice

1. someone's bestie : ~의 가장 친한 친구 

 

My fourth-grade daughter goes to school with her bestie every day.

초등학교 4학년인 우리 딸은 매일 단짝 친구와 같이 통학을 합니다.

 

I lost touch with my bestie in middle school.

나는 중학생 시절 가장 친했던 친구와 연락이 끊겼다.

 

I still meet my bestie at least a few times each year.

​나는 아직까지도 일 년에 최소 몇 번씩은 가장 친한 친구를 만난다.

 

2. in a gloomy mood : 기분이 우울한 

 

My daughter seemed to be in a gloomy mood.

딸아이의 기분이 우울해 보였습니다.

 

I am often in a gloomy mood on Mondays.

나는 월요일에 기분이 우울한 경우가 많다.

 

Sometimes, it's not so bad to be in a gloomy mood.

​때로는 기분이 좀 우울한 것도 나쁘지만은 않다.

 

3. heart-to-heart : 깊은 대화 

 

I met with the friend's mother for a heart-to-heart.

그 친구의 엄마를 만나서 깊은 대화를 나누었습니다.

 

It's time for us to have a heart-to-heart.

우리가 진지하게 대화를 할 때가 왔다.

 

After a long heart-to-heart, we were able to understand each other.

​한참 동안의 진솔한 대화 끝에 우리는 서로를 이해할 수 있게 되었다.

Dialogue Practice

A : My daughter has been feeling down lately because she had a fight with her best friend.

 

B : Oh no, that must be really tough for her.

 

A : Yes, as a mother, I'm really worried about how I should help her.

 

B : It takes courage to apologize to each other. You should try talking to her about it.

 

A : l've already been doing that.

 

B : The world our kids live in isn't any different from our adult relationships.
