Korean Schools Abroad

 

There are currently 34 Korean schools in 16 countries for expats overseas. In March last year, my husband was dispatched to a Korean school abroad for three years, and we have been living at his place of work together.

​

The overseas Korean school here uses Korean textbooks for classes. The students also have 12 hours of English and 4 hours of the local language every week, putting in a lot of effort to improve their foreign language skills. I was especially impressed when, during a talent show held by the 6th-grade students last year, the program was introduced in Korean, English, and the local language.

​

I hope that the students at these overseas Korean schools will grow up to become talented adults who serve as bridges between Korea and the host countries, contributing to the development of both. I also hope that the school will continue to develop during my husband's remaining term and that he will complete his work without incident before we return to Korea.

 

Pattern Practice

2. contribute to the development of : ~의 발전에 공헌하다(기여하다.) 

 

I hope that the students will contribute to the development of both countries.

학생들이 앞으로 두 나라의 발전에 공헌하기를 바란다.

 

Every employee must want to contribute to the development of the company.

직원 모두가 회사의 발전에 기여하고자 하는 마음이 있어야 한다.

 

Many engineers contributed to the development of the product.

제품의 개발에 많은 엔지니어들이 기여했다.

3. without incident : 무탈하게, 별일 없이 

 

I hope that my husband will complete his work without incident before we return to Korea.

남편이 무탈하게 근무를 마치고 귀국했으면 좋겠다.

 

I returned to the hotel without incident.

나는 무탈하게 호텔로 돌아갔다.

 

The event concluded without incident.

​행사가 별 탈 없이 마무리됐다.

Dialogue Practice

A : What's this video?

 

B : Oh, it's a video of students at an overseas Korean school performing a K-pop routine.

 

A : Wow, they're really something. They look like a real idol group.

 

B : The students are abroad, but they even perform traditional Korean percussion. It's impressive.

 

A : Are you watching it because you are planning to go abroad?

 

B : Yes, that's right. I have to live abroad for two years starting next year.
