Meeting a Compatriot at Frankfurt Airport  

 

A few years ago, I had to transfer to a flight to Stockholm at an airport in Frankfurt. I needed to find Lufthansa Airlines to check in for my flight, but Frankfurt Airport was so huge that I couldn't find my way.

​

I tried asking for directions at the information desk with my limited English, but I couldn't make sense of the English spoken by the staff. I eventually found my way to the airline after circling the airport a few times, but all the counters were closed.

​

I was worried, thinking "Oh no, I've become an international missing person, " when I suddenly heard someone saying "So long" in Korean from a boarding gate in the distance. I ran over and explained my situation, and they kindly took me to an open airline desk.

​

Even now, when I think about that time, I feel proud of the Korean people living all around the world.

Pattern Practice

1. with one's limited English : 부족한 영어 실력으로 

 

I tried asking for directions at the information desk with my limited English.

부족한 영어 실력으로 안내 데스크에 길을 물어보았습니다.

 

I was able to communicate even with my limited English.

나는 부족한 영어 실력으로도 소통을 할 수 있었다.

 

I ordered a meal with my limited English.

​나는 부족한 영어 실력으로 식사를 주문했다.

 

2. make sense of ~을 알아듣다, 이해하다.

 

I couldn't make sense of the English spoken by the staff.

직원들이 하는 영어는 전혀 알아들을 수가 없었습니다.

 

Don't try to make sense of it.

그걸 꼭 이해하려고 애쓰지 마.

 

I was finally able to make sense of it after reading it a third time.

세 번째로 그걸 읽어 보니 마침내 이해할 수 있게 되었다.

 

3. all around the worid : 세계 곳곳에 

 

I feel proud of the Korean people living all around the world.

세계 곳곳에 살고 있는 우리나라 사람들에 대해 가슴이 뿌듯해집니다.

 

The company has shops all around the world.

그 회사는 세계 곳곳에 매장을 운영하고 있다.

 

People all around the world have seen that movie.

​세계 곳곳에서 사람들이 그 영화를 관람했다.

 

Dialogue Practice

A : How was your trip to Europe?

 

B : I had a bit of a hard time because the airport in Europe was so big.

 

A : Oh, really?

 

B : Yeah. I was going in circles trying to find the airline desk. Luckily, there was a Korean person at the airport who helped me out.

 

A : Wow, that was really kind of him.

 

B : I think I'll remember that person for the rest of my life. I felt grateful the whole flight back.
