Driving Practice

 

I got my driver's license a few years ago, but I was too scared to drive on the highway. So, I haven't actually driven for the past seven years. But I made up my mind that I needed to start driving again, so I took a 10-hour driving course. However, that wasn't enough, so I am practicing some more with my husband.

My husband teaches me patiently at first, without getting angry. But eventually, he gets frustrated and starts raising his voice. He mainly points out two things: first, look far ahead; second, don't grip the steering wheel too tightly.

​

But I struggle with both. The car wobbles when I try to stay in my lane.

Especially on the highway, I still can't judge how much to turn the steering wheel. I've scheduled another round of driving practice with my husband today. I hope today's lesson will be peaceful.

 

Pattern Practice

1. make up one's mind : 마음을 먹다, 결정하다 

 

I made up my mind that I needed to start driving again.

다시 운전을 해야겠다고 마음을 먹었습니다.

 

Everything looks so good that I can't make up my mind.

전부 다 너무 맛있어 보여서 결정을 못하겠다.

 

He always takes a long time to make up his mind.

그는 결정을 내리는 데 항상 시간이 오래 걸린다.

2. raise one's voice : 언성을 높이다 

 

Eventually, he gets frustrated and starts raising his voice.

결국에는 답답해하며 큰소리를 냅니다.

 

It was so noisy that I had to raise my voice.

어찌나 시끄러운지 나는 언성을 높일 수밖에 없었다. 

 

Don't make me raise my voice.

​나 언성 높이게 하지 마.

 

3. stay in ones lane : 차선을 유지하다.

 

The car wobbles when I try to stay in my lane.

차선을 맞추다 보면 차가 이리저리 흔들립니다.

 

Just stay in your lane for now.

당분간은 지금 차선을 그대로 유지해.

 

My car can stay in its lane on its own.

​내 차는 스스로 차선을 유지할 수 있다.

 

Dialogue Practice

A : Have you started driving?

 

B : Yes, I stopped driving for a while after I got my driver's license, so l'm practicing again.

 

A : Oh, I see.

 

B : I can't wait to become a good driver.

 

A : I'm sure you'll learn in no time.

 

B : I want to be able to drive to the grocery store and even go on trips all on my own.
