Koreans' Love of Cold Water 

​

Koreans have a strong preference for cold water. Most people here favor ice-cold water. On the other hand, I remember being surprised on a business trip to China when I found that the water coolers did not dispense cold water.

​

One theory is that this is a cultural difference stemming from water quality.

In Korea, there has long been a culture of drinking cool water directly from underground sources or mountain streams. But in other countries, it became customary to boil water before drinking it due to poor water quality.

​

If your hair feels stiff after you wash it when you're abroad, it's because of the lime content in the tap water. In a way, we were lucky to be born in a country where we can drink cool, tasty water whenever we want.

One theory is that this is a cultural difference stemming from water quality.

수질이 좋지 않아서 물을 끓여 마시는 문화가 정착된 것입니다.

 

It soon became customary to take selfies in public.

머지않아 공공장소에서 셀카를 찍는 문화가 정착되었다.

 

It has become customary to send text messages in most cases.

​대부분의 경우 문자 메시지를 보내는 것이 관례가 되었다.

 

3. whenever one wants : 원하면 언제든 

 

We were lucky to be born in a country where we can drink cool, tasty water whenever we want.

우리가 시원하고 맛 좋은 물을 원하면 언제든지 마실 수 있는 나라에 태어난 것은 행운이기도 합니다.

 

You can check the news whenever you want.

원하면 언제든지 뉴스를 확인할 수 있다.

 

They visit whenever they want, without even calling in advance.

​그들은 사전에 연락도 하지 않고 원하면 언제든 방문한다.

 

Dialogue Practice

A : I can't drink lukewarm water.

 

B : Same here. I have a habit of only drinking cold water.

 

A : Yes, I only drink water that's been kept in the fridge.

 

B : I often even add ice to my water.

 

A : But they serve lukewarm water when you go abroad, even in restaurants.

 

B : Yes, sometimes they even serve soft drinks that way.
