My Students' Graduation  

I have been an elementary school teacher for 10 years. This year, I became the homeroom teacher for a group of 6th graders. I have taught various grades over the years, but this is my first time being a 6th-grade homeroom teacher.

I found it challenging to guide children who are going through puberty. The most difficult part was managing aspects of their lives outside of class. These included relationships with classmates and issues with friends of the opposite sex. It has been a chaotic year, but I have grown very attached to the kids.

​

The students will be graduating soon, and I feel sad to think that we will be parting ways. There were many days when they drove me crazy. Even so, 1 must really love these kids if I feel this sad about letting them go.

Pattern Practice

1. find it challenging : 어렵게 느껴지다 

 

I found it challenging to guide children who are going through puberty.

한창 사춘기에 접어든 아이들을 지도하기란 여간 어려운 일이 아니었습니다.

처음 해 보는 거라면 어렵게 느껴질 수도 있어.

 

I found it challenging to finish on time.

​제시간에 끝내기가 어렵게 느껴졌다.

 

2. grow very attached to : ~에 정이 많이 들다.

 

I have grown very attached to the kids.

아이들과 미운 정 고운 정이 많이 들었습니다.

 

I have used my smartphone for several years, and I've grown very attached to it.

나는 내 스마트폰을 수년간 사용하면서 정이 많이 들었다.

 

I grew very attached to the students I tutored in college.

​나는 대학 시절에 과외를 해 준 학생들에게 정이 많이 들었다.

 

3. drive someone crazy : ~의 속을 많이 썩이다 

 

There were many days when they drove me crazy.

제 속을 썩인 날들이 참 많았습니다.

 

It drives me crazy that only one is a different color.

한 개만 색깔이 달라서 나는 너무나 거슬린다.

 

That noise is driving me crazy.

​저 소리 때문에 미쳐 버릴 것 같아.

A : Were you a homeroom teacher for the 6th grade this year?

 

B : Yes, that's right. It's almost time for the kids to graduate.

 

A : You must feel quite sad to let them go.

 

B : Yes, as a teacher, I get a lump in my throat to see the kids leave.

 

A : I understand how you must feel.

 

B : On graduation day, I want to tell the kids how happy I was to spend the year with them.
