Volunteering at an Animal Shelter 

 

 In 2017, I moved into a new house and started raising two dogs. One of them was adopted from an animal shelter. The idea of "Adopt, don't shop," deeply resonated with me, which led me to adopt. This adopted dog has become part of the family, and we've been living together happily for seven years.

 

I naturally developed an interest in rescue dogs, and I began volunteering at an animal shelter once a month. When I arrive at the shelter, the first thing I do is remove the newspaper that was laid out for the dogs to relieve themselves. I clean the floor and lay down fresh newspaper. Then, I use a mop to wipe the floor of the dogs' living areas, and I give them food and water.

 

Even though I volunteer only once a month, I have gotten to know the dogs at the shelter, and I've grown attached to them. I hope to continue volunteering and making donations in the future.

2. relieve oneself : 배변을 하다

 

I remove the newspaper that was laid out for the dogs to relieve themselves.

개들의 배변을 위해 깔아 놓았던 신문지를 걷어 낸다.

 

We take a walk twice a day so our dog can relieve herself.

강아지가 배변을 할 수 있도록 우리는 매일 두 번씩 산책을 한다.

 

I stopped at a rest area to relieve myself.

나는 화장실에 가려고 휴게소에 들렀다.

 

3. grow attached to : ~에 정이 들다

 

I have gotten to know the dogs at the shelter, and I've grown attached to them.

어느덧 보호소에 있는 개들에게 익숙해지고 정도 들었다.

 

Sometimes, I grow attached to things that aren't even alive.

나는 살아 있지도 않은 물건에 정이 들 때가 가끔씩 있다.

 

We really grew attached to each other in that short time.

그 짧은 시간 동안 우리는 서로 정이 많이 들었다.

 

Dialogue Practice

A: Did you mention that you do volunteer work at an animal shelter?

 

B: Yes, I go once a month.

 

A: What do you usually do there?

 

B: I clean the facilities and move donated items where they're needed. Just this and that.

 

A: I see.

 

B: Sometimes I help out with grooming and clean the dogs' ears, too.
