Seed Vault

 

A notably high number of wildfires have been reported this year. Recently, a large wildfire wreaked havoc in Hawaii, resulting in the loss of many lives and wildlife. If such natural disasters continue to occur, the survival of plants that sustain our lives will be at risk.

Meanwhile, there is something called a seed vault. This is a type of plant seed storage facility set up as a safeguard against the disappearance of plant species due to natural disasters, climate change, or war. There are two such vaults in the world: one in Svalbard, Norway, and the other in Bonghwa, right here in Korea. Norway stores seeds of food crops, while Korea stores seeds of wild plants.

Unlike a seed bank, which provides seeds to be used as needed, a seed vault is intended as a last resort to preserve seeds for future use when plants become necessary.

3. as a last resort : 최후의 수단으로

 

A seed vault is intended as a last resort to preserve seeds for future use.

시드 볼트는 미래에 최후의 수단으로 쓰기 위해 종자를 보존하는 목적을 가지고 있다.

 

This is only to be used as a last resort.

이것은 최후의 수단으로만 사용해야 한다.
