Korean Broadcasts with English Subtitles 

​

When I first started studying English, I made a resolution to only consume content in English. But as time passed, I began to miss out on many Korean TV shows. Sometimes, I felt like I was falling behind the times.

​

So, to keep up with Korean content and alleviate the guilt of neglecting my English studies, I started watching Korean videos with English subtitles. I believe it will be a useful way to learn English expressions that accurately reflect the nuances of the original Korean.

​

I frequently use a digital note app to organize English translations of Korean expressions that I am likely to use. I think it will be very helpful to record myself reading them aloud and listen to them repeatedly.

Pattern Practice

1.  make a resolution to :~하기로 결심하다(다짐하다) 

 

I made a resolution to only consume content in English.

나는 영어로 되어 있는 콘텐츠만 보기로 마음먹었다.

 

Many people make a resolution to lose weight at the beginning of the year.

연초에는 많은 사람들이 살을 빼기로 다짐한다.

 

I made a resolution to get to work earlier.

​나는 출근을 더 일찍 하기로 결심했다.

 

2. fall behind the times : 시대에 뒤떨어지다 

 

Sometimes, I felt like I was falling behind the times.

가끔은 유행에 뒤처지는 느낌이 들기도 했다.

 

I've really fallen behind the times since I turned 40.

나는 40대가 되고 나서 유행에 정말 뒤처졌다.

 

A tech company cannot fall behind the times.

​기술 회사는 시대에 뒤떨어져서는 안 된다.

 

3. alleviate the guilt of : ~의 죄책감을 떨어내다 

 

To alleviate the guilt of neglecting my English studies, I watched videos with English subtitles.

영어 공부를 게을리한다는 죄책감을 덜어 내려고 영어 자막을 틀어 놓고 영상들을 봤다.

 

I exercised to alleviate the guilt of snacking all day.

나는 하루 종일 군것질을 한 죄책감을 덜어 내려고 운동을 했다.

 

I play with my son on weekends to alleviate the guilt of working late all week.

일주일 내내 야근을 한 죄책감을 덜어 내기 위해 주말에는 아들과 함께 놀아 준다.

Dialogue Practice

A : l've been watching only English videos to study English, but sometimes it gets boring.

 

B : It might be because it feels like studying.

 

A : Do you have any useful pointers?

 

B : How about watching Korean content with English subtitles?

 

A : Wow, that's a fresh new way to study!

 

B : l've tried it, and it's a great way to catch two birds with one stone, both fun and learning.
