Living Alone for the First Time 

 

Sometimes, I find myself thinking about my days living in a dorm as a student.

I got accepted into a university far from home, and it was my first time living apart from my parents.

​

Some kids arrived at the dorm with their parents' cars packed with belongings.

But I traveled by bus with my mom, and all I had were some daily necessities and three sets of clothes. When I arrived at the dorm for the first time, I was over the moon to have some space to myself. I had my own bed, and most importantly, plenty of hot water for showers.

​

Meanwhile, my mom told me she spent days crying her eyes out after leaving me at the dorm. I only heard about this after I graduated from college. Looking back, I think children grow up to be more resilient than their parents expect.

 

Pattern Practice

1. get accepted into :~에 합격하다

 

I got accepted into a university far from home.

나는 타지에 있는 대학교에 합격했다.

 

I got accepted into the company last year.

나는 작년에 그 회사에 합격했다.

 

Not everyone can get accepted into their dream school.

누구나 꿈꾸던 학교에 합격할 수 있는 것은 아니다.

2. have some space to oneself : 자신만의 공간이 있다.

 

I was so happy to have some space to myself.

나는 나만의 공간이 생겨서 너무 행복했다.

 

Our house is very small, so I would love to have some space to myself.

우리 집은 워낙 작아서 나는 나만의 공간이 있다면 너무나 좋겠다.

 

I moved out of my parents' house to have some space to myself.

​나만의 공간을 갖기 위해 나는 부모님 집에서 이사를 나왔다.

 

3. cry one's eyes out : 펑펑 울다  

 

My mom told me she spent days crying her eyes out after leaving me at the dorm.

엄마는 나를 기숙사에 두고 오고 나서 몇 날 며칠을 눈물로 보냈다고 하셨다.

 

I cried my eyes out when I first saw that scene.

나는 그 장면을 처음 봤을 때 펑펑 울었다.

 

My eyes are puffy because I cried my eyes out last night.

​어젯밤에 펑펑 울었더니 눈이 부었다.

Dialogue Practice

A : Did you live with your parents during college?

 

B : No, I lived in a dorm.

 

A : Oh, really? For all four years?

 

B : No, just during my freshman year. I moved out to live on my own starting sophomore year.

 

A : Wasn't it hard living alone?

 

B : I think I mostly enjoyed it because I was free to do whatever I wanted.
