An Incident with Neighbors

Not long after we moved into our current apartment, our downstairs neighbor knocked on our door. He asked if we could keep it down at night since they had a high school senior in their family. I sincerely apologized and gave my kids a stern talking-to. We've gotten along fine since then.

However, a new family moved into the apartment above us. Their loud footsteps at night bothered my husband so much that he went upstairs to have a word with them. The man upstairs retorted that it's only normal for houses with kids to be noisy, which set off an argument. Voices were raised, and both the neighbor's wife and I had to step in to calm our husbands down. After that, we didn't interact with them.

A short while later, our child and the child living upstairs ended up in the same class and became the class president and vice-president. They had to work together on school events. We moms started talking and exchanging greetings again. But the fathers still continue to ignore each other.

Pattern Practice

1. downstairs neighbor :

Our downstairs neighbor knocked on our door.

We have never met our downstairs neighbors.

We shared the food with our downstairs neighbor.

2. Keep it down : 조용히 하다.

He asked if we could keep it down at night.

I try to keep it down after 10 PM.

I had to keep it down because my sister was studying.

3. calm someone down : ~를 진정시키다

Both the neighbor's wife and I had to step in to calm our husbands down.

I took my son to the bedroom to calm him down.

Nothing we said could calm him down.

Dialogue Practice

A : We're still in an argument with the upstairs neighbors because of the noise.

B : Oh no. You must be really stressed out.

A : Yes, last time we even raised our voices quite a lot.

B : That's unfortunate.

A : I suppose things are bound to happen with neighbors when you live in an apartment building.

B : That's true. We all need to make concessions and handle situations wisely.
